The city of Novosibirsk is situated in the South
East of the West Siberian Plain. It was founded in 1893 on the
banks of the river Ob. There is an artificial water reservoir
formed by storage dam. Climate is sharp continental. The average
temperature in January is 20 degrees below zero centigrade, in
July - 20 degrees above zero centigrade.

Leading industries are mechanical engineering and
metal-processing. Electric power industry, industry of building
materials, food and chemical industry, non-ferrous metallurgy are
among the other developed industries. The agriculture is
specialized in cultivation of a grain, potatoes, vegetables.
Poultry husbandry, apiculture, cattle-breeding and dairy industry
are advanced.
The city is a large transport conjunction of Siberia.
Novosibirsk has a river port. There is an airport and the Metro.
Culture
The Siberian branches of the Russian Academy of sciences is
located in Novosibirsk. There are more than 20 higher education
institutions.
The Opera and Ballet House, the Theatre of Musical Comedy, the
Young People's Theatre, the Regional Drama Theatre, the Puppet
Theatre, the philharmonic society, the circus are waiting for
their spectators.
Regional, geological, zoological and other museums attract
attention of guests. The Picture gallery contains a rich
collection of Russian and foreign art. The production of the
West-Siberian book-publishing house is well known in all Russia.
Academic township is a complex of research institutes, located
28 kms from the center of Novosibirsk among a natural green forest
tract of coniferous and deciduous trees.
Musical Novosibirsk
The City of Novosibirsk is rightly recognized the third musical
capital of Russia.
The monumental building of the Opera and Ballet House,
constructed in the central square in 1945, has become a symbol of
the city. In its repertoire there are classical operas and ballets
of Russian and foreign authors, performances for children.
The Theatre of a Musical Comedy is always crammed full
and this is the main confirmation of high artistic level of
performances.
The Philharmonic society carries out a role of the main
organizer of concert life in Novosibirsk. Many philharmonic
collectives became famous both in Russia and abroad: the
Novosibirsk State Symphonic Orchestra conducted by professor
Arnold Katz, People’s Artist of the USSR, Russia’s State Prize
winner (Orchestra was founded in 1956 by Arnold Katz); the Chamber
Orchestra (was created in 1990 by Mikhail Turich, an Honoured
Artist of the Russian Federation); the Chamber Choir under the
direction of Igor Yudin, Honoured Artist of Russian Federation
(Choir exists since 1981); Pavel Sharomov’s Vocal Ensemble
(1992); ensemble of early music “Insula magika” directed by
Arkady Burkhanov (1991).
The creative work of Novosibirsk composers coordinated by Novosibirsk
branch of All-Russia Union of Composers has become an integral
part of musical life of the city.
The system of musical education includes three grades: musical
schools (the oldest is the music school number 1, opened in
1934), musical college and Novosibirsk State Conservatoire
(Academy).
